How do I get a debit card?

I am 18 about to leave for college in the fall and I would like to sign up for a debit card. I'm opening a checking account before I leave for school, but my over analytical mother does not want me to get a debit/credit card because she thinks I'm going to run around crazy with it once I'm gone. That is absolutely not the case. I'm an extremely responsible person and if you know me you'll know how true that is. She's just paranoid and...well yeah. So when I get the chance I would like to go down to the bank and sign up for one but I'm not entirely familiar with the process. What do I have to do/bring with me in order to get one? I'm not trying to sneaky or secretive about it, if my mom finds out it's fine, but I'd prefer to just get it on my own without her hassling me. Can someone please help? Oh and what is the process after I obtain it as far as usage, deposits, etc?
